Erica Deuso has been elected mayor of Downingtown, Pennsylvania. This makes her the first out transgender mayor in the state’s history.

In a Facebook post celebrating her win, Deuso wrote, “Yesterday’s victory shows what we can accomplish when we come together with respect, hope, and purpose… Being elected as Pennsylvania’s first openly transgender mayor is deeply meaningful, and I carry that responsibility with pride and humility.”

She also thanked voters, election staff, and her opponent, adding that she hopes her win reminds anyone who’s ever felt “unseen, unheard, or underestimated” that their voice matters and they “belong in the room where decisions are made.”

Deuso closed her message with a promise to “build on this progress” and continue working for her community in the years ahead.
