LIONS OUTLAST LANCERS IN THRILLER TO WIN CIF-SS TITLE: The jserra.girlsflagfootball team completed its undefeated 28-game journey in title-winning fashion on Saturday, as the Lions rallied to defeat Trinity League rival Orange Lutheran 25-20 to win the CIF-SS Division 1 championship game at Fred Kelly Stadium in Orange.

The Lions grabbed a 7-0 lead with 4:23 remaining in the first quarter, as freshman quarterback Kate Meier eluded the Lancers rush and heaved a deep pass down the left side for freshman Ava Irwin, who high-pointed the ball and held on to the ball as she tumbled into the end zone for a 36-yard touchdown reception.

A successful conversion pass from sophomore Ava Van Heerde to freshman Tessa Russell made it 7-0.

Orange Lutheran responded with a touchdown on their ensuing drive and then grabbed a 13-7 lead with 5:33 left in the first half.

The Lions tied the game at 13-13 in the third quarter on a spectacular leaping 32-yard touchdown catch from Meier to Irwin.

After a key 50-yard reception by junior Bria Johnson, junior Kai Beary put the Lions in front 19-13 with 55 seconds left in the quarter with a 12-yard touchdown catch from Meier.

Orange Lutheran answered with a touchdown and conversion with 6:53 left in regulation to grab a 20-19 lead.

Spurred by a huge 14-yard reception by Beary on 4th and 11 on their final possession of the game, Meier propelled the Lions into a five-point lead with a six-yard touchdown run with 1:00 remaining.

Orange Lutheran marched back to the Lions’ two-yard line with six seconds left in the game, but the Lions forced an incomplete pass, before junior Avery Olson helped force an incomplete pass on the final play of the game to seal the championship for the Lions.
