One important thing I teach the athletes I work with is how to let go of, redefine and ultimately free yourself of expectations.

So many athletes are especially weighed down by their own unrealistic expectations or the expectations of people important to them, like a coach or parent.

Why is that a bad thing?

Expectations are tied to our emotions.

Do you know what that means?

Since our expectations are rooted in emotions, they are very hard if not impossible to live up to.

Why?

Because emotions are fleeting. They ebb and flow like the waves, which can make them exhilarating one minute and absolutely crushing the next.

Like my daughter (pictured) learning how to catch some waves at the beach this week.

She was absolutely thrilled and squealing with delight when she was riding high on a wave, then would get immediately get hit in the face by the very next wave knocking her over after standing back up.

Sometimes she would pop back up with determination and excitement, and other times she would be so utterly defeated and discouraged.

Expectations (and emotions) are not a solid foundation. They actually become more like quicksand when you place all of your hopes and dreams on them.

So what's the solution?

To become more goal focused and allow your expectations to rest more on how you execute your quality of training. Expectations should be part of your daily training journey and not on your final outcome.

The integrity with which you train or perform is the perfect place for expectations. That's where you can hold yourself to the highest standard, giving everything you've got each day.

But even in training, the expectation should be firmly on your attitude and effort, not your outcome.

If you want to learn more about how to separate your goals and expectations, I address it in detail in the Take Action Workshop.

I hosted it live last week, but you can still grab it on demand at the nearly 40% discounted price for two more days!
