One thing I was very fortunate enough to find time for was having an internship early on in college. That helped me get one set closer to obtaining a job because of the hands on experience I got. Being a student athlete, that’s not always the case. A typical student athlete is practicing 5 days out of the week along with classes, study hall, and tutoring sessions etc., that by the time their day is over it is about the same time people are coming home from a 9-5. I’ve noticed that there’s not really much time to squeeze in internships in there. NOW, with a lot of hard work and time management, it is very possible, but options may be limited. 
One thing that I (and many other student athletes) were told when first starting out in college was that we would have an upper hand when the time comes to get a job. We know time management, communication, and working in a team setting. What I feel like happens now, is that people who get internships early on and those who have time to get that experience in the career field they want to go into will most likely get the job and hiring managers look at that way more. 
Being a student athlete cannot be the only thing you rely on to get you a job. Sure it’s a great thing to have on your resume, but you have to find what sets you apart! What makes you unique? Being intentional about finding experiences was a game changer that I learned my sophomore year of college. Whether it’s an internship, volunteering, working for the school, or just networking and building those communication skills, that will set you apart from the field you enter in once finishing college athletics. The student athlete title is awesome to have on your resume because it shows very great qualities, but that should be the foundation on your resume that you build on not just the only thing that stands out.
