5 things every basketball fan should know about NIL this season:

1️⃣ Colleges can now pay athletes directly for the first time. Each has a $20.5M annual cap across all sports.

2️⃣ High-major (Power 4) athletic departments are near the full $20.5M in total athlete compensation. Mid-major (Group of 6) programs operate closer to $4.3M.

3️⃣ Most of that pool goes to football.
High-major MBB budgets ≈ $3M
Mid-major MBB ≈ $600K
High-major WBB ≈ $1M
Mid-major WBB ≈ $200K

4️⃣ Basketball-first schools — like those in the Big East — have a major advantage. Without football, they can direct up to 4–5x more toward hoops than Power programs.

5️⃣ The top players are cashing in:
Men’s basketball stars can earn $2M+ per year
Women’s basketball stars can earn $500K+ per year
