Resident of Catherine Hall in Montego Bay, Risizne Thorpe says he has been left with nothing after Hurricane Melissa. The taxi operator explained that his only source of income - a white Nissan Wingroad - was covered in mud where it was parked before the storm, with one of the vehicle’s windows shattered during the early stages of the hurricane.

“Right now, my situation can’t even be described. There’s no word for it. I don’t have anything. I lost everything. The only thing I have is my children and my wife, and she lost her job too,” he said.

Thorpe recalled being terrified when rising floodwaters suddenly swept into the home. “We never expect the water. The water just take us by surprise. I was so frightened. I had to grab my two smaller children and run upstairs for rescue.”

He is now trying to clean his home, which he says had four to six inches of mud inside. “That’s my problem right now. I have to make money, but apart from trying to clean out the house, there’s no money. That’s the reality. I just finished cleaning out two rooms.”
