Bree Fram, one of the highest-ranking transgender officers in the U.S. military, has spoken out after being placed on administrative leave under the new trans ban, saying her service didn’t end when she removed her uniform: “That oath has no expiration date.”

Fram, who served nearly 23 years in the United States Space Force and United States Air Force, reportedly told attendees at the induction ceremony for The San Diego LGBT Community Center’s LGBT Veterans Wall of Honor that the roll-back of trans service rights is “almost unprecedented in terms of re-institutionalizing discrimination.”

After Trump initially introduced a trans military ban during his first presidential term, which the Biden administration then overturned, the president signed an executive order in January called “Prioritizing Military Excellence and Readiness,” which banned trans people from serving in the military.

In February, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a memo enforcing the ban and halting gender-affirming care for service members and their families.

While the order was contested in the courts, in May the Supreme Court ruled that it could go into effect, and trans troops were given a deadline in June to self-identify for voluntary separation.

Fram, during her keynote speech, reminded the nation that trans folks have served “everywhere, every rank, every service,” and now, albeit out of uniform, she vows to keep defending freedom and inclusion.
