Chappell Roan recently inducted Cyndi Lauper into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, wearing a look inspired by the singer’s ‘True Colors’ music video.
The singer’s 1986 hit resonated deeply with LGBTQ+ audiences, especially during the height of the AIDS crisis.

In her introductory speech at the event, Chappell shared that she performed the queer anthem during a singing competition as a child, and has held Lauper’s music close ever since.

Chappell said: “It’s that courage that not only creates incredible art that gives everyone who experiences it the permission to be themselves – it opens their hearts, it changes their mind, and that is its power. Tonight, we honour a woman who redefined what a pop star could look like, sound like, and be.”

Lauper herself has been a long-time LGBTQ+ ally and activist; she co-founded the True Colors Fund (now called True Colors United) in 2008 to support homeless LGBTQ+ youth.
