“The whale shark is the largest fish in the ocean, and can reach lengths of up to 18 meters. These sharks are gentle filter feeders that mainly eat plankton and small fish.

One of the most striking features of the whale shark is its beautiful skin pattern, which consists of white spots and pale stripes scattered across its dark blue body.

These patterns resemble a starry sky, where no two whale sharks share the same constellation. Each individual shark’s arrangement of spots is unique, much like our human fingerprints.

Marine scientists use these patterns to identify and track individual whale sharks around the world. The spots and stripes also serve as a form of camouflage called disruptive colouration, helping to break up the shark’s outline and protect it from predators.

Their patterns begin forming when the whale sharks are young and remain unchanged throughout their life.”
