This piece, Family Archive Triptych [Bin #1], is the introductory work to a new series exploring my family’s archive on my maternal side. This exploration is made with the special accompaniment of my grandma, also known as “G.”

G is a natural storyteller and the matriarch of a family in which the women—my mom, my aunts, and others—have been meticulously recording and photographically archiving our family since the late 50s. Though many of them may not consider themselves photographers or archivists, their consistent documentation has created a rich, complex history to engage with (and in my eyes, they all are photographers in their own right).

My work responds to this history by creating multimedia and installation pieces that interpret the delicate line between fiction and fact. In delving into the archive of my maternal relatives, my practice becomes fixated on the suburban, domestic sphere and the stories held within it. Parlaying and injecting my own ruminations on what is, what was, and fabricating what remains in recorded form(s).

In this triptych, these ideas take physical form. A portrait of my grandma, printed on canvas, is deconstructed and reassembled onto a pair of found window blinds. A mattress, a profoundly domestic object, is used to fix photographs from my grandparents’ youth in place with insulation foam. Finally, a series of insulation cans have photographs from the archive cemented directly onto their surfaces, leaving them in various states of destruction and aging. The work captures the act of remembering and the inevitable decay of both the physical photograph and the memory it represents.
