#OnThisDay in 1960, six-year-old Ruby Bridges was escorted into her elementary school by four deputy U.S. marshals during the New Orleans desegregation crisis. At just six years old, her bravery in attending the school under intense hostility and threats helped pave the way for desegregation in the South and made her a symbol of the Civil Rights Movement.

Today her story continues to inspire the next generation of leaders to end racism together, one step at a time. In 1999, she established the Ruby Bridges Foundation to offer programs and resources to guide and support younger generations on their pathway toward a more peaceful and harmonious future. At the initiative of students, the State of California recognizes every November 14th as the Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. This annual event to commemorate Ruby's historic steps is celebrated all around the United States by those who are continuing the movement to end racism and unify our communities.

RubyBridgesofficial is a tremendous advocate for education and literacy awareness. For the past eight years, the National Civil Rights Museum has hosted the Ruby Bridges Reading Festival where Ruby Bridges, and other authors, come together to celebrate reading, diversity, and community in a vibrant, family-focused atmosphere.
