I first met Sam at the Bullhand Rodeo Academy bull riding and bullfighting school under the tutelage of Scott Byrne. Outgoing and excited to be making his foray into the rodeo world, we became fast friends. He has since worked in the BRC, cutting his teeth and gaining not only experience, but a reputation for putting his shit on the line for the boys. In an unfortunate incident not too long ago, he entered a freestyle bullfight at the Calgary Stampede grounds, he suffered a year ending knee injury and would be sidelined. That is just as much of a test of someone’s drive and resolve as any stage of making your way to the top of any sport, and Sam came out with flying colours. Ensuring he was ready, he came back this season and has turned enough heads that he attained his PBR membership.

One of my favourite aspects of Sam is his bullshit free demeanour. There is minimal ego to get in the way of his steps to the top, and thats a massive part of what makes great friends but also brings success. We all need one to survive, but it’s how you handle it that builds your circle. We see each other a few times each year but share a love of gaming in the offseason which helps us keep up contact during the slower moments. I am incredibly excited to see Sam making his way in the sport, and to quote him from Saturday night, “I guess we can call me a professional now.” Well deserved, great work, especially in the efforts to save Aaron Roy from being camped on by his first bull, and I look forward to seeing where else you get to showcase you hard-earned talents. Congrats.
