Ten years into full time work within the rodeo and bull riding space, you get to see veterans and legends retire, rookies show up, then show out. But seeing that next generation inside a group of people youve gotten to know and build a really fun and positive relationship with is really special. I met Scott Byrne only a few days after his dance with Indian Turtle in Ponoka. If you know, you know. It was in the Sports Med tent at Ranchmans. And while he was dealing with a wee injury to his face through his busiest time all year, he had time to shake my hand, and make me feel welcome in a space I was still reasonably new in. That was 2012.

Flash forward to 2025, 13 years later and his son, Brayden fought his first performance of the PBR Canada Cup Series in Ottawa, Ontario, filling in for Jesse Byrne. I have gotten to know Brayden these last few years, and we became fast friends. I don’t know if it is out ridiculously similar, and often offside sense of humor, or just the fact that we love the same facets of this community, but he is one of those people who makes my travel and social anxiety completely disappear upon arrival. He cares immensely about his people, evident by the amount of times I have heard him remind me, and many others, “love you bud, phone is always on, always.” You don’t find those kinds of people everywhere, but in the Byrne clan you do.

Bullfighters are only as good as the guys you fight with. Brayden has cut his teeth in the College Rodeo ranks, the BRC and a good chunk of Pro Rodeos and PBR events.  At this level, he is surrounded by the best of the best. It was a ton of fun to be able to capture his first outing at this level of the sport in Canada, and I look forward to seeing him continue to make waves in his role, elevate others and bring the tenaciousness needed to be a bullfighter at the professional level.
