As the great Canadian George Stroumboulopoulos told me, and an auditorium full of journalism, broadcast media students at SAIT many many moons ago, “if you have a parent or a grandparent in hospital, and they cant get a private room or are struggling to make ends meet, and you didn’t vote in the last election? You can kindly shut the fuck up about it.” My grandfather was shipped overseas and spent the better part of a year as an enlisted man with the Canadian 4th Armored Division as a member of the 15 Field Ambulance in World War Two. He didn’t speak much of his experiences, but as a student of that specific conflict, I see a lot of similarities between those times and these times, and it’s upsetting. He fought for the rights of people on the other side of the globe. He fought for the sovereignty of Canada, and he fought for his family, your family and the families of the future. Democracy dies when we become complacent. My message comes down the middle, as I don’t care who you vote for, I just care that you vote. Took me four minutes. If you don’t have four minutes to do your part, I dont have four minutes to talk about the issues of today with you.
