“If a country doesn’t want you, all you have left to protect is your dignity.”

Yanira, a woman who fled gang terror in El Salvador ten years ago says the fear she once escaped returned under President Trump’s immigration policies, triggering a panic attack that sent her to the hospital after she suddenly found herself face-to-face with ICE agents.

She had left her country after gang members threatened to kill her and her family because, as a healthcare worker, she couldn’t save the life of a gang member with multiple gunshot wounds.

Now, she’s decided to self-deport, and on November 17, she will leave the United States and make her way back to the place she once had no choice but to walk away from.

“I left my country because of fear, I’m not going to stay in a country where I’m also afraid,” she told CBS News. “I’d rather be afraid in my own country than stay here.”

After nearly a decade, she says she is returning to her country with gratitude for everything this country gave her, but also with the hope “that one day the United States becomes again the nation full of humanity” she once believed in.

Yanira requested anonymity as this story published ahead of her departure, citing concerns about potential repercussions from immigration authorities. #trump #ice #immigration #elsalvador #gang #usa #healthcare
