I finally got word back from the City of Piqua — they’re not pursuing any further rebrand efforts at this time.

I can’t say I’m surprised, but I do wish I would’ve had the chance to present these concepts.

Before getting into the designs, here’s why everything is shown in black and white — it’s important to see a logo for what it is. Color can influence how someone feels about a design, so by removing it, you’re forced to focus on the structure, balance, and storytelling within the mark itself. If a logo works in black and white, it’ll work anywhere.

After about 50 iterations, I narrowed it down to these six. During my research — and keeping Piqua’s own brand story in mind — I knew we needed to take a direction that showcased the outdoors, since Piqua wants to be known as an outdoor city.

When you look at Piqua’s history (as the city should have, too), two elements consistently stand out:
	•	The canal system, which played a huge role in shaping Piqua’s early identity.
	•	The Piqua Hotel (now the Public Library), one of the city’s most iconic and enduring landmarks.

Those two features became the foundation for this series of concepts — each one telling the story of a place that’s rooted in history, nature, and connection. You’ll see elements like water, bridges, trees, and fields woven throughout, creating a visual language that reflects both Piqua’s past and its vision of being an outdoor community.

The final iteration, #6, ties it all together — the hotel silhouette paired with a Native American feather, nodding to Piqua’s heritage and even bringing back a nostalgic detail from past logos where the feather appeared in the dash of the letter Q. This design scales perfectly to do the same, symbolizing a modern return to the city’s roots.
