Welcome to the start of a 30-part series diving into my MFA work, “Homosemiocryptics Volume I,” which maps the hidden syntax of queer survival in an age of commodification and surveillance. This exhibition is an archive of the necessary, coded language that communities develop when official language and public space are hostile or unavailable. We’re moving past simple aesthetics to investigate the functional linguistics of desire, kink, safety, and belonging. These codes are not frivolous; they are vital language-making that actively preserves community against erasure. Over the course of these reels, we’ll break down the symbols, signs, and objects that make up this semiotic architecture.

The term itself—“Homosemiocryptics”—fuses “Homo-“ (sameness/identity), “Semiotic” (the study of signs and symbols), and “-cryptics” (hidden meaning). This practice is a direct response to the shrinking of dedicated queer spaces. Rather than being purely aesthetic, these codes are tools used to denote hookup spaces, signal immediate danger, and affirm mutual recognition. It is language as infrastructure. Tune in tomorrow as we begin to unpack Symbols 1-4, which encode the internal landscape of shame that queer life often necessitates.
