As Scotland's teachers prepare to vote on industrial action over their workload and the amount of time they actually spend in front of a class, former teacher James McEnaney says the situation in classrooms is "utterly corrosive."⁣
⁣
Mr McEnaney, who is education specialist for The Herald, says he's not sure he could go back to teaching with the current demands on those in the profession.⁣
⁣
He says: "I think people can't understand what it's like... going into work every day knowing you are letting children down."⁣
⁣
Teachers say it is almost five years since the SNP's election manifesto promise to cut class contact time by 90 minutes a week to give teachers more time for activities such as lesson preparation and marking.⁣
⁣
Scotland's largest teaching union, the EIS, began its postal ballot on Wednesday, while the NASUWT will begin its vote from 19 November.⁣
