## Caption

The AT-AT Drivers, first seen in The Empire Strikes Back (1980), were not originally designed as Imperial soldiers. 

Ralph McQuarrie and Joe Johnston initially created the outfit as a concept for Rebel space pilots, which was later adapted and repurposed for the Imperial walker pilots.

That’s why their helmets visually combine elements of both TIE Fighter Pilots and Stormtroopers, while their breathing system more closely resembles that of Rebel pilots.
