Angling and the importance of not getting caught up with the flow of the play:

- A goal that I am seeing scored with regularity at the professional, collegiate, and junior levels is where goaltenders are overcommitting to their short side and allowing their momentum to carry past the shot release point. As players become increasingly skilled and the pace of the game has become much faster, it is paramount for goaltenders to understand their angle, how much they genuinely need to move, and the awareness of the hand of the shooter. Both of these examples have right handed shooters coming down the left wing side. When the players go to release, both goaltenders are actually in very good position. The hard part comes in with controlling your momentum to fill the net. It is so important for goaltenders to train in non-static situations. We often tell the goaltenders that we train that the hardest skills to acquire are knowing when to move, how much to move, and having your feet underneath of you when the shot is released. It is incredibly easy to get caught up on the flow of the play, so working on angle drives focusing on staying with the stick blade and understanding working back towards your net will actually decrease the amount you need to move. It is important to learn from the difficult goals, as your ability to stop those is what will propel you into an elite level keeper.
