Call it a hot take, call it an unpopular opinion, call it whatever you want - but I think the pricing problem in our industry does NOT start and stop with new artists.

I’ve worked in a lot of different industries and I’ve never come across one that is quite as secretive about pricing than the balloon industry. And don’t get me wrong, I understand the fear of losing clients to someone who chooses to charge less on purpose.

BUT I’ve also trained, educated, and mentored hundreds of new balloon professionals over the years and the only consistent thing I hear from them all is that they are working too much and making too little, they have no idea how to charge for their work, and any time they’ve tried to ask an industry leader they are either ghosted or yelled at.

How do you think Nordstrom learns how to price a new pair of boots? They see what other department stores are charging.

How does Netflix decide how much to sell a new subscription for? They check out Hulu and Apple TV.

How does a new electrician figure out how much to charge for hanging a light? He checks out what other electricians in his area are charging.

This isn’t a new concept. In fact, it’s an important foundational element of starting a business, and it even has a name: market research.

So the next time you feel yourself getting frustrated about a new competitor in your area charging too little, remind yourself that you were once just like them and you would have fixed your own prices a lot sooner if someone had been a little more transparent with theirs ♥️
