“The Maldives is famous for sharks and manta rays, but diving here reveals much more under the surface. These islands are rich in coral reefs, schooling fish, and all kinds of marine life. The Maldives are also home to more anemonefish than anywhere I have ever seen, each living in a tight partnership with its anemone host. The fish clean the anemone, chase off threats, and feed it nutrients through their waste. In return, the anemone protects the fish from predators and gives them a safe home. When this partnership is healthy, it is usually a sign that the surrounding reef is still functioning.

Sadly, many reefs across the Maldives have been damaged by warming water, coastal construction, pollution, and untreated sewage. Some coral gardens are still holding on, but even the stronger ones are under growing pressure. We are at a critical point globally and the choices we make now will determine whether coral reefs around the world will have a chance to adapt to warmer seas and survive.”
