February is #TeenDatingViolenceAwarenessMonth. Studies show that approximately 10% of adolescents report being the victim of physical violence at the hands of an intimate partner. Violence is not just physical, but can also be sexual and verbal.

Girls are particularly vulnerable to experiencing violence in their relationships and are more likely to suffer long-term behavioral and health consequences. Early warning signs of an abusive partner include: demanding to know how a teens’ time is spent, constricting time with family or friends, controlling what a teen wears or does, verbally aggressive and more.

Take the time to talk to your teen. If you think your teen is involved in an abusive relationship contact the SCV Sheriff’s Station at 661-260-4000 for guidance. Counselors are also available 24/7 by calling the Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-779-SAFE (7233).
