LIONS GROUND GOLDEN HAWKS: The jserra.girlsbasketball team opened the 2025-26 season in winning fashion on Monday, as the Lions defeated the El Dorado Golden Hawks 67-31 at the Villa Park/Portola Kickoff Classic at Portola High School in Irvine.

Juniors Kayla Rice and Vivian Grenald each totaled six points in the opening period to propel the Lions to a nine-point lead at the end of the first quarter.

Juniors Shae Talleur and Rosie Santos knocked down back-to-back three pointers early in the second quarter to help push the Lions advantage up to 17 points.

El Dorado trimmed the deficit back to nine points by halftime, but two three-pointers by Talleur and two baskets by Grenald fueled a 10-0 Lions’ run over the first 3:37 of the third period that sparked a 23-8 quarter advantage.

A driving lay-up at the quarter buzzer by senior Reese Katkin gave JSerra a 49-25 lead heading into the final period.

Talleur put the finishing touches on the Lions’ victory by connecting on three shots from behind the arc in the fourth quarter.

Talleur finished with a team-high 22 points on 8-of 12 shooting, including 6-of-10 from behind the three-point line, and a team-high three steals.

Grenald finished with 16 points and a team-best 15 rebounds, while Rice added 16 points and seven rebounds.

Santos scored six points, dished out a team-leading seven assists, and grabbed five rebounds.
