In 1968, a 24-year-old Suzanne Jackson opened Gallery 32, a self-funded art space that became a hub for activism and creativity.​

It hosted fundraisers and events, gave emerging Black artists a platform, and staged The Sapphire Show—the first survey of African American women artists in Los Angeles.​

Today, SFMOMA devotes an entire gallery to Gallery 32 in “Suzanne Jackson: What Is Love”. Reuniting works first shown at Gallery 32 by Betye Saar, Senga Nengudi, David Hammons, Timothy Washington, and more. ​
