House Update! After speaking to many contractors and firing three of them, I came to the conclusion that we had to learn how to do this huge project ourselves! So with the knowledge of historic books and catalogs, oldhouseonline and YouTube we took this failing floor apart ourselves. The joys were rotted and hacked to hell by amateur plumbing and burst water pipes. I knew that if we faced this problem head-on we would be able to correctly diagnose the problem and heal the house. So we did! We gained the courage to rip down and rebuild a whole floor after being told that “it couldn’t be done!” Or “that will be $20K.” Or “cover it with LVP flooring.” 😒 Instead of contractors, we hired a good plumber and electrician. It was during this process that we had the small bedroom plumbed to be a large bathroom and turned the original bathroom into a laundry room. It also gave us the opportunity to have all the hazardous knob and tube wiring taken out. We started this project in January and it’s now July. It’s taking quite a long time because the attention to detail we are taking to make it look as if the bathroom has always belonged to the house. Every detail matters in these old homes. That’s why we went as far as reconfiguring the tiles to a smaller grout line. Modern materials are made quickly and with not much detail. It’s up to us to be the quality control and to find a way to mold these modern materials to imitate a romanticized version of the past. The tile alone took me about three months to find and I sourced it from many different vendors to find the correct shade of colors and sizes that would emit a historic ambiance. I didn’t want stark white!!! It just wouldn’t match with the antiquity of the house. Anyway, we are having so much fun gilding this house and making it a peculiar haven! Stay tuned as more magic unfolds! Oh and I can’t wait till you see what we have planned for the rest of this room! 🖤
