“I still think about his face. The little puppy who’d gotten his leg caught in the blinds while his family was away. By the time they returned, the damage was done. He needed an emergency amputation. The estimate came in at $5,000. Our veterinary team was already overwhelmed and working through back-to-back appointments. They simply didn’t have the capacity. We had to say no.

That word - no - is one of the hardest parts of rescue. It breaks our hearts every time we have to use it. And the truth is, we don’t say it lightly. We say it because we have to.

When I started this organization, I made a quiet promise to myself: that we would say yes whenever we could. Yes to the scared. To the broken. To the forgotten. Yes to the ones everyone else had already turned away.

But I made another promise, too… one that’s just as important. I promised to make sure we could continue to sustain and grow our impact in this community. That we wouldn’t just rescue today, but be strong enough to keep rescuing for years to come. And that means sometimes, we’re forced to make impossible choices.

And yet, every day, the calls and emails pour in from shelters, from families, from people who don’t know where else to turn.
