This weekend marks the 90th meeting between Auburn and Alabama on the gridiron. The two teams first faced off in 1893 with the Tigers pulling out the 32-22 victory. They would play seven more times by 1907 before taking a 41-year break from competitive meetings. Games would finally resume in 1948 and the two in-state rivals have faced off every year since.⁣
⁣
The earliest games bounced around between Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Montgomery before settling in the Iron City in 1904. Every game from then would be held at the historic Legion Field until Auburn brought the game home to campus for the first time in 1989. Alabama would continue to host their home games against the Tigers in Birmingham until the series returned to Tuscaloosa in 2000 for the first time since 1901.⁣
⁣
The Iron Bowl has seen legendary players and coaches come through the series, Heisman Trophy winners, and countless conference and national titles. And, despite both teams being well known for sticking to a traditional uniform approach, the Iron Bowl has seen numerous design changes.⁣
⁣
Alabama once swapped between crimson and white helmet shells, even wearing both colors in the same game. Auburn also went through different orange, navy, and white helmet colors, sometimes wearing the former two colors in the same game. Back in 1950, Auburn would outfit their team in different helmet colors depending on their position – orange for QB, RBs, and WRs, navy for offensive line and defensive players.⁣
⁣
Auburn would wear orange jerseys against the Tide’s crimson jerseys in 1953, the only time since the resumption of the series in 1948 that the Tigers have not worn navy or white. ⁣
⁣
Between 1950 and 1963, the Iron Bowl featured a color-on-color matchup nine times. More on that coming later this week!⁣
