After a decade of living and renting in Los Angeles, Ren von Hasseln (renceramics_) and her husband, Kyle, set their sights on buying a home in Ojai, a town two hours north. When they closed on their 1956 ranch house, the property was undeniably worse for wear, with threadbare carpeting, an overgrown yard, and an inexplicable hole in the kitchen ceiling. Ren, a ceramicist with a degree in architecture, took the lead in the overhaul, intent on designing a functional home that would include a backyard accessory dwelling unit for her studio. We asked Ren to walk us through the entire process, from closing the deal to the home’s handmade touches to the small setbacks along the way. Swipe to see some construction BTS, and read Ren’s #ConstructionDiary at the link in our bio.
