Native American Heritage Month: Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe, born in Oklahoma on May 28, 1887, died in Lomita, California on March 28, 1953. A member of the Sac and Fox Nation, Thorpe broke barriers in the early 20th century to become one of the most versatile athletes in history. He made history by winning gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon at the 1912 Olympics, only to have them controversially stripped and later reinstated decades after his death. Despite facing systemic racism and limited opportunities as a Native American athlete, Thorpe’s determination and achievements inspired generations, making him a symbol of both athletic greatness and cultural perseverance.

Beyond sports, Jim Thorpe represents the power of Native voices in shaping American history. His story reflects not just physical strength but also spiritual endurance, humility, and pride in heritage. Honoring Thorpe during Native American Heritage Month recognizes the lasting impact of Indigenous athletes and leaders who have paved the way for equality and representation across all fields.
