A hiker on a little-known Colorado peak is alive today thanks to a friend’s split-second decision to use his belt as a makeshift anchor—a move that kept the injured man from tumbling hundreds of feet farther down a steep, rock-strewn mountainside. 

But the improvised save was only the start of a harrowing, all-night rescue that pushed search-and-rescue crews into dangerous, collapsing terrain as they worked to bring him out before dawn.
