Draped in pearls and fur, this woman of Storyville looks directly at us across more than a century. E.J. Bellocq’s portraits refused to reduce their subjects to stereotypes—he captured their individuality, grace, and quiet strength in an era that often denied them dignity.

His glass-plate negatives, rediscovered decades after his death, remain some of the most hauntingly beautiful records of New Orleans’ fabled red-light district.
