🎷🎺 Freddie Keppard & “Big Eye” Louis Nelson, c. 1918–1919

Two giants of early New Orleans jazz. Freddie Keppard, one of the first musicians offered the chance to record jazz (though he famously declined), and “Big Eye” Louis Nelson Delisle, a clarinetist whose sound carried the spirit of Storyville.

Together, they represent a moment when jazz was still new—spreading from Basin Street to dance halls, theaters, and eventually, across the nation.

✨ On December 6, 2025, the Improvisations Gala will honor Storyville’s musicians and the revolutionary sound they created.
