Known as the “Bell Gal” for the red garters with bells she wore while performing, Sweet Emma Barrett was one of the most beloved figures in New Orleans jazz.

Born in 1897, Emma was a self-taught pianist who played with unmatched spirit and joy. She became a cornerstone of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, bringing traditional New Orleans jazz to audiences around the world well into her later years.

Her playful style and infectious personality made her a symbol of the music’s enduring power.
