Happy Birthday, Julie Mehretu 🎂🎈

Last year, juliemehretu transformed the BMW M Hybrid V8 into BMW Art Car #20 with her dot grids, neon-colored veils, and black markings characteristic in her work. Mehretu’s Art Car also marked a first for the 50-year history of the legendary BMW Art Car Collection: the African Film and Media Arts Collective (AFMAC a.f.m.a.c), bringing the artistic collaboration beyond the car. 

“I wondered how I could make the Art Car a symbol and vocal archive for the immense artistic creativity of the African continent,” said Mehretu on her ambition for designing the 20th BMW Art Car.

In 2026, the films created as part of AFMAC’s workshops around the world will debut in a major exhibition alongside the 20th Art Car at Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town.
