Julie’s exhibition ‘They departed for their own country another way (a 9x9x9 hauntology)’ at White Cube Bermondsey in 2023 directed a focus towards enduring conflict, widespread displacement and the asymmetry of power, referencing the ongoing war in Ukraine and the events of the US Capitol insurrection of 6 January 2021.⁠

Harriet Lloyd-Smith interviewed Julie in Plaster Magazine, writing: ‘In the cavernous concrete halls of White Cube Bermondsey, where a pin drop might trigger an indefinite echo, and one more watt might induce dazzlement, Julie Mehretu has created something which is not just for looking at, but through; for dancing with, not just standing before.’⁠
