Democrat Mandela Barnes, former lieutenant governor of Wisconsin and 2022 U.S. Senate candidate, officially launched his campaign for governor on December 2, 2025, according to multiple news outlets. With the current governor stepping aside, he’s stepping into the first open governor’s race the state has seen in 16 years, and the Democratic primary is already stacking up with competition.

For Black Greek Life, this moment hits different. Kappa Alpha Psi’s own is not just chasing a title; he’s positioned to become Wisconsin’s first Black governor if he wins. That’s history, yes, but Barnes keeps pushing the focus back to working people. According to reports on his launch, his announcement video centers on affordability, good jobs, and respect for labor. He even holds up his father’s worn UAW jacket, a visual reminder that his story runs through union halls and factory floors, not just campaign stages.

Barnes is running on a simple but serious message: put working families first and rebuild real opportunity across the state. He draws a contrast with what he calls the “Washington way” of politics, where slogans come easy and results come slow. He talks instead about lower costs, fair wages, health care that doesn’t crush your wallet, and a government that looks like it actually remembers who pays the taxes and does the work.

According to analysts, he’ll share the primary ballot with other Democrats ranging from local executives to state lawmakers. His 2022 Senate loss still trails him in the headlines, but Barnes seems to wear it as experience, not failure. For him, it’s proof you can take a hit, regroup, and step back into the arena with more clarity and more fight.

For the Divine Nine audience watching, this is achievement in motion: a Milwaukee kid, a Black man, a Kappa, turning lived experience and community roots into a run that could reshape leadership in Wisconsin.
