When Kommah McDowell was only 29, she heard the words no one is ever prepared for: stage IV inflammatory breast cancer. Doctors told her she had a 5% chance of survival. She and her fiancé were devastated — and told she would probably never be able to have children.

But Kommah came to City of Hope for a second opinion, seeking not only treatment, but hope. Here, she underwent surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation — an exhausting journey marked by fierce determination.

“With hope, you just keep pushing,” Kommah says. “And I chose to fight through it.”
Two years after completing radiation, something extraordinary happened: Kommah learned she was pregnant. Her son, Christian is a miracle she once feared she’d never experience.

Today, more than 14 years cancer-free, Kommah’s life is filled with purpose. She is a wife, mother, author, keynote speaker, and founder of her own nonprofit, advocating for patients facing rare and aggressive breast cancers. She continues to receive care at City of Hope Orange County, a place she credits with changing her life and her future.

“My story is about hope and the possible impossibles,” she says. “I want every patient to know that even when the odds say otherwise, hope is real.”
