Our founder is pulling back the curtain on the reality of being “the only” Black person in professional spaces and we want to hear your thoughts.

We often talk about stress in the workplace, how to manage it, and how to take care of ourselves. But what about the long-term cost of “going along to get along”? Where do we draw the line between professionalism and self-preservation, especially when our careers are on the line?

At Free to Be Collective, we’ve always kept it real  about the experiences of everyday Black women and femmes navigating work, life, and community. And we’ve been just as transparent about our own journeys as Black women building a nonprofit while working in corporate America.

So here’s the scenario:

You’re expected to attend a team outing under pressure of being singled out or targeted but it’s at Lake Lanier.

For those unfamiliar, Lake Lanier sits on land that once belonged to a thriving Black community called Oscarville in Forsyth County, GA. In 1912, white supremacist violence forced more than 1,000 Black residents out, destroying homes and seizing land. Decades later, that land was flooded to create Lake Lanier, burying what was left of that community. For many of us,  it’s more than a landmark. 

So we’re asking:
What would YOU do if a work event required you to go to Lake Lanier?
Would you go? Would you decline? How would you navigate it professionally?
