Suffocating defensive pressure and damaging turnovers created a recipe for disaster for San Francisco State University’s men’s basketball team. In their Collegiate Conference Athletic Association home opener, the Gators were physically outmatched by the now 6-0 California State University, East Bay Pioneers, losing 60-46.

“I got a very young team; this is the first conference game for basically everyone on my roster,” said head coach Vince Inglima. “Their team is a bunch of seniors, and they’re athletic, physical and tough. We got a taste of it, and now the question is, ‘Can we come back and make some adjustments?’”

The Pioneers pushed the pace early and got off to a blazing 8-0 run. An and-one layup by junior forward Bricen Buciak ended the Gators’ early scoring drought. He would continue to score the next four points for the Gators, finishing with a team-high 12 points in the contest.

It was apparent early in the game that the Pioneers’ relentless defensive intensity would give the Gators trouble all night. The Gators struggled to find open shots as the Pioneers continuously cut angles and clogged up passing lanes. The Pioneers forced them to use the entire shot clock, ultimately creating bad looks for the home team.
