4 years ago vs. today [2021 vs. 2025]

4 years ago around this time, I had an abscess in my throat and the body went into sepsis. Crazy. It was freshman year and all I could think about was finishing my first found object sculpture “Karen” for Stephen Signa-Aviles class. I was pissed, but eventually plowed my way back to Urbana and finished her. That diva. I miss her. She still roams the streets of Urbana someone told me.

A month later, we would lose you, Gramps, in that same hospital. In many ways I feel like I’m just starting to grieve you now as I look at your reflection that looks like mine in the stain of a cyanotype.

Today, I finish my second critique of grad school and am 1/4 of the way done with grad school. Woah. Time? Is a medium sometimes. Is of the essence eternally.

I see a thread between the collection and the amalgam as it continues to fascinate and overwhelm you. This was a letter, in many ways, to my family, to him, and to the stranger who left me their trash that I found to be treasure. So saddening yet a responsibility to acquire. I am thankful that I have found the way here and will continue to collect, disperse, and arrange.
