Please join us in congratulating Wayne – he's finally tube-free after having a trach tube in his neck for five years!
Wayne’s lungs weren’t developing properly before he was born, and doctors gave him just a 14% chance of survival. In 2019, he was born premature at a hospital in Santa Clara County with #bronchopulmonary #dysplasia (BPD), a chronic lung disease. Wayne’s care team placed him on a mechanical ventilator to keep him alive, and he endured a collapsed lung and multiple lung tears.
Wayne came to our #SanFrancisco hospital for a cardiac catheterization procedure and eventually had his #tracheostomy tube inserted. At the height of the pandemic, our team gave Wayne a special graduation ceremony in our Intensive Care Nursery!
Now, five years later, Wayne has made incredible progress and even helped remove the tube himself! He loves gymnastics and art class and is a proud big brother!
