On December 4, 2025, Texas’ new “bathroom bill”, Senate Bill 8, officially went into effect, banning transgender people from using multi-stall restrooms and other public facilities in schools and government buildings that match their gender identity.

Under the law, institutions face fines up to $125,000 for violations; while individuals aren’t criminalized, the burden of enforcement raises serious concerns over privacy and safety. The bill also restricts how shelters, prisons, and jails classify and house transgender people.

Back on 28 August 2025 during congressional debate over SB 8, Rep. Erin Zweiner directly challenged the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Angelia Orr— asking Orr directly if she intended “to run trans people out of the state of Texas?”
