In February 2025 President Donald Trump offered refugee status to Afrikaner farmers, to leave what he described as a “genocide” in South Africa.

It’s estimated that thousands of Afrikaners - who are mostly white descendants of early European settlers - have begun the lengthy process of applying for refugee status in the US, although the figures haven’t been made public.

With the South African government denying claims of a white genocide, the BBC has been talking to farmers, residents, and victims of violence in South Africa, who challenge this narrative.
