Today I went to a protest to support one of the places I love most — Armenia. I’m sure you all know how much I love my culture and my home away from home. It’s so hard to be so far away, feeling like I can’t do much to help. But today, amongst my Armenian brothers and sisters of the diaspora, I felt like I was doing something to support Armenia from afar. With a new challenge added on top of the pandemic, Armenia is struggling, and for my non-Armenian followers, here’s an explanation of what’s going on between Armenia and Azerbaijan:

A Little History:
The land at the center of this conflict is called The Republic of Artsakh (also known as Nagorno-Karabakh). It was annexed by the Soviets (USSR) in the 1920s and was controlled by Azerbaijan — even though 95% of the area is comprised of Armenians. Since then, the area has been fought over in the Nagorno-Karabakh War (1988-1994) and the Four Day War of 2016. The area is currently a de facto independent state.

What’s Happening Now?:
On July 14th of this year, a PPE mask factory was bombed by the Azerbaijani army, and they also opened fire on civilians and even on a kindergarten. In the streets of Azerbaijan, thousands of protestors joined to chant the sentiment of “Death to Armenians” and encouraged for the capital city of Armenia — Yerevan — to be overtaken. On July 16th, there was a threat by Azerbaijan to blow up a power plant in Armenia, which would cause mass destruction and death.

Why This Is Important To Know:
Many Armenians are struggling to stay afloat during this time, and adding a war to an already dire situation would mean many more people would be displaced and in severe poverty. If this conflict becomes full scale war, it could include countries like Russia, Iran, Turkey, the EU and the United States —this is not just an isolated incident far away across the world.

Big cities across the world are holding protests encouraging the world to #supportarmenia. Please consider finding one in your area to join in solidarity for the Armenian people (remember to be safe and wear a mask!) It would be much appreciated if you shared this with family and friends. Thank you ❤️
