Seoul, the city of young millionaires 💸

This year, nearly half of all buyers who bought apartments in Seoul priced over ₩10 billion (about $6.8 M USD 💵) were born in the 1980s or 1990s. These “super-rich” young buyers reportedly paid entirely in cash, without taking out loans. 

According to Financial News, the prices ranged roughly from ₩10 billion (~$6.8 M USD) up to ₩25 billion (~$17 M USD), and the properties were spread across both Seoul’s traditional luxury neighborhoods and its hot new areas — like Apgujeong, Cheongdam, Samseong, Hannam, Banpo, and Seongsu. 

Among the 32 buyers, ages ranged from those born in 1999 to 1955 — but 9 were born in the 80s and 6 in the 90s, making up more than half of the list. 
Trading Economics

Most of these young ultra-wealthy buyers turned out to be startup founders or celebrities — and BTS’s Jin (jin) and V (thv) were even named among them.

It’s a report that shows a generational shift in Seoul’s high-end real estate market.

올해 서울에서 100억 원 이상 아파트를 사들인 매수자 중 절반이 1980~1990년대생인 것으로 나타났습니다. 이른바 ‘슈퍼 리치’ 청년들은 대부분 대출 없이 전액 현금으로 초고가 아파트를 매입했다고 해요.

파이낸셜뉴스에 따르면 매입 금액은 100억 원부터 250억 원(약 1,700만 달러)까지 분포해 있었고, 압구정·청담·삼성·한남·성수·반포 등 전통 부촌부터 신흥 부촌까지 다양한 지역에 걸쳐 있었습니다.

매수자 32명의 연령대는 1999년생부터 1955년생까지 다양했지만, 그중 1980년대생이 9명, 1990년대생이 6명으로 전체의 절반 이상을 차지했어요.

젊은 부자들의 상당수는 스타트업 창업자 또는 셀럽으로 확인됐으며, 그 중에는 BTS의 Jin(jin)과 V(thv)도 포함되어 있다고 합니다.

이번 보도는 서울 초고가 부동산 시장에서 세대교체가 본격적으로 이뤄지고 있다는 걸 보여주는 상징적인 사례이죠.
