Treating slippery walkways with salt? Follow these three simple steps to keep sidewalks safe and protect our waterways:
🪏 Shovel snow first – the more snow you clear, the less salt you'll need
🧂 Spread a little salt – a coffee mug is usually enough
🧹 Sweep up the leftovers - can be reused
🧊 Bonus tip: When temperatures drop below –12°C, use sand instead of salt for traction

Salt helps make sidewalks and roads safer in winter, but it can also harm pets, wildlife, and water quality. A little goes a long way: a coffee cup of salt can cover about 10 metres of sidewalk.
