U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala) joined Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) to reintroduce the NIH IMPROVE Act, which would ensure consistent funding for research on maternal care and mortality.

In 2019, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) launched the Implementing a Maternal Health and Pregnancy Outcomes Vision for Everyone (IMPROVE) Initiative.

IMPROVE supports research to reduce preventable causes of maternal deaths and improve health care for women before, during, and after pregnancy.

The program currently lacks a sustained funding source, Britt’s office said in a recent news release. The IMPROVE Act would authorize $73.4 million annually for seven years to support research on potential causes of maternal mortality.

“I’m proud to fight for moms and women across Alabama and America. This bipartisan legislation will support targeted funding for critical research to improve health outcomes for women throughout their pregnancy journey," Britt said in the press release.

According to the most recent figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are nearly 700 pregnancy-related deaths each year in the U.S., and 80% of those deaths are preventable.

March of Dimes this week also released its 2025 report card, which highlights factors contributing to maternal and infant mortality and morbidity. Alabama earned an ‘F’.

Over a third of Alabama’s 67 counties are classified as “maternity care deserts,” or areas without access to birthing facilities or maternity care providers.

Additionally, Alabama has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the nation at 59.7 deaths per 100,000 births, according to Britt’s release.
