🏈 Imperial Tigers Stay Undefeated With a 14–7 Win Over Brawley

The IVL matchup between the Brawley Wildcats and Imperial Tigers did not disappoint. In a physical, old-school battle under the Friday-night lights, the Tigers came away with a hard-fought 14–7 victory to remain unbeaten in league play.

It wasn’t pretty — but it didn’t have to be. Both defenses set the tone early, forcing punts, penalties, and long third downs all night. The Tigers, who came in averaging 41 points per game, were held to 14. Meanwhile, Brawley’s offense was tested by a determined Tiger front that refused to back down.

The turning point came on the opening kickoff of the 2nd half. Brawley attempted an onside kick, but Imperial recovered and immediately made them pay. Deren Hueso broke free for a 41-yard touchdown run, putting Imperial up 14–0. The Wildcats answered with an 80-yard drive, capped by a 7-yard touchdown run from Jared Gutierrez, cutting the lead to 14–7 — but that’s where it stayed.

Earlier in the game, Gio Robles hauled in a 15-yard touchdown pass, giving Imperial an early boost in what became a defensive slugfest.

“An ugly win’s better than a pretty loss,” said Head Coach David Shaw. “Our defense has only given up seven points or less in all league games — two of those were our biggest games this year. We knew we’d get everyone’s best shot, but our kids punched back — old-school Imperial Valley football.”

With the victory, Imperial improves to 3–0 in IVL play, while Brawley drops to 2–2. The win sets up a league-deciding showdown next Friday as Imperial hosts Holtville, coming off a 58–14 win over Calexico. The winner takes the IVL title outright at Shimamoto-Simpson Field.

Meanwhile, Brawley turns its attention to the Central Spartans, fresh off a bye week, for one of the biggest rivalries in the nation — the 82nd Bell Game.
