❗️The era of the “bulletproof” engine may be over, as the internal combustion engine faces perhaps the biggest reliability crisis in its history.

To meet increasingly strict government emissions and fuel economy regulations, automakers have been forced to push piston technology to its absolute physical limits.

Manufacturers have traded long-term durability for efficiency by utilizing high-stress turbochargers, loose piston rings, and ultra-thin oils that offer virtually no margin for error.

The result is a massive wave of mechanical failures, with over 4.3 million engines flagged for recall since 2015 due to catastrophic defects.

From Toyota’s debris-filled twin-turbos to GM’s failing truck V8s and Hyundai-Kia’s multi-billion dollar seizure crisis, no brand seems immune to these quality control slips.

These complex, high-tolerance designs demand aerospace-level precision that is proving nearly impossible to maintain on cost-conscious mass-production assembly lines.

Much like the complex carburetor eventually became too troublesome to survive, the modern combustion engine is now becoming fragile and “disposable” in its final evolutionary stage.
